That’s why our eBikes, electric scooters and, hoverboards are fitted with air-filled tires using Schrader valves.

These valves are similar to the valves found on your car tires. It was important to us that you would be able to go anywhere that had a standard air pump and be able to refill your tires without any extra hassle. Our eBikes and electric scooters can be filled at most gas stations, sporting goods shops, and some local stores.

How Much Air Should I Put in My Scooter or eBike Tires?

The owner’s manual that came with your SWAGTRON product will tell you the optimal tire pressure. The sidewall of your tire will have a number stamped on it, and it will probably be higher than the recommended pressure in the owner’s manual. This is because the tire sidewall number states the maximum pressure the tire can handle, whereas the owner’s manual number reflects the optimal tire pressure.

All SWAGTRON product manuals can be found on our FAQ pages or by following this link. SWAGTRON Product Manuals.

Even then, use the owner’s manual number as a guide rather than gospel. Play around with the tire pressure until you find the most comfortable ride. The air in your tires may expand on hot days, so it might pay to deflate them 2-3 PSI. Since all body types are different, you might find different PSIs perform better depending on body weight. Just don’t stray too far from the booklet recommendation, and especially don’t exceed the tire-sidewall number.

Will a Bike Pump Work on My SWAGTRON eScooter or eBike?

It might.

There are two major kinds of valves. We already mentioned the Schrader valve because it’s found in SWAGTRON products. The other common valve type is the Presta valve. Presta valves were made for street-style, thin wheel bike tires and are about half as wide as Shrader valves. They also don’t have a check-valve pin in the center like the Shrader valve.

READ MORE ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESTA AND SCHRADER VALVES HERE.

If your bike pump is a Presta-only pump, it won’t fit around your tires’ Schrader valves. The good news is many modern bike pumps are made to service both kinds of valves. Included in these pumps are:

 • Twin-head pumps, which come with both a Presta and a Schrader gasket
 • Swappable-head pumps, which have an adjustable gasket that can be altered to fit either kind of valve
 • Adjustable-head pumps, which feature a head that requires no alteration. Just press firmly on either kind of valve and pump

Why Shrader Valves? Aren’t They for Cars?

Close-up of guy using gas station air pump to air-up his bicycle.

Yes, these valves are for cars, but other things use them as well. We chose this valve for one reason, convenience. With this valve, you have several options for refilling your tires other than carrying around a pump.

Most of the following places have air pumps that support this valve, gas station air machines, sporting goods shops, and most auto stores.

So, no matter where you are, you will always have local support options available for refilling your eScooters or eBikes tires.

Just make sure, however, you’re not approaching the maximum pressure stated on the tire sidewall when topping off your tires’ air. Doing so could result in a tire blow-out.

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Electric Bike, Electric Scooter, Hoverboard and other eRideables https://swagtron.com/news/cleaning-and-maintaining-your-electric-bike-electric-scooter-hoverboard-and-other-erideables/ Tue, 08 Dec 2020 17:42:04 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=535537 Cleaning and maintaining your rideable—electric or otherwise—is the best way to help your ride last a long time and maintain optimal performance. Too often, people find themselves on their backside because maintenance hasn’t been their top priority. So, if you don’t want to end up on YouTube chasing after the runaway wheel of your bike, use the tips below to clean and maintain your electric scooter, electric bikehoverboard or electric skateboard

General Cleaning

The first step in making your eRideable look presentable is wiping it down. You take a shower to clean the sweat off yourself after a ride, so make sure you give your eBike a “shower” too. A clean damp cloth will help make your off-road eBike look better by removing dirt, dust and grass.

For those extra-grimy areas, like the handlebars and wheels, dish soap or mild household cleaner can help eliminate the extra grime. A toothbrush is great for cleaning the wheels, as it can get into the tread where dirt is often trapped. It may also help in removing small pebbles and rocks that can become stuck.

Give the bike a good wipe over once you are done to take care of any leftover dust or dirt. And always remember to keep water far away from the electrical components, like the battery.

The swagCYCLE series of eBikes have no pedals and are a bit easier to keep clean.

Frame

The frame of the eRideable holds everything together, and without it, you just end up with two wheels, a battery and a drivetrain. Check it over carefully to ensure that everything moves as it should and, conversely, that nothing moves that shouldn’t. Periodically grease movable parts such as the sprockets according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and make sure you have a full range of movement on any part that is meant to move.

Wheels

Cleaning and maintaining wheels is vital in making sure your eScooter and you make it to class on time. You also don’t want to take a dive in front of friends after bragging about your amazing skill on your electric skateboard due to a wobbly wheel.

Remove any rocks or stones lodged in the tire’s crevices to ensure they don’t get further pushed in when you are out and about. Also, clear any dirt or grass that is stuck to it as well. Once a week, or as often as needed, check the tires over to see if there are any punctures or possible cracking. If there are any, don’t ride until they are fixed. You might be able to patch some punctures, but sometimes a trip to a shop that specializes in eRideable repairs is necessary.

Wheels are the only thing keeping you up off the ground, so look after them — at least until you can really hover.

Chains

Not all eBikes have chains. The no-pedal bikes—like the swagCYCLE Classic or the swagCYCLE Envy—don’t. They’re pure throttle. But for all others, you’ll want to keep the chain nice and lubricated. A dry chain won’t shift gears smoothly. And they sound terrible—like an ear-piercing banshee’s wail. After long, an unoiled chain will rust and, dangerously, snap while riding. Check your local bike shop for chain oil recommendations.

Closeup of someone oiling the chain of their electric bike.
Clean and oil your eBike’s chain to keep it in prime condition.

The lithium-ion Batteries

The lithium-ion batteries used in eRideables can be dangerous when damaged or used improperly. Keep your battery sealed and dry. In addition, give it an occasional inspection to check that it’s in one piece. If it has denting or cracks in the outside structure, you should get it replaced. We have replacement battery packs that work with a lot of our eRideables.

You should also check for corrosion on the contacts. While this is highly unusual, it’s always worth a quick look every month or so or after a major wipeout (if you’re doing stunts, you need to give it a solid check-over).

Semi-Annual Maintenance Check

When it comes to traditional electric bikes — like the EB7 Plus or the EB12 Electric Road Bike — we recommend getting your eBike looked at by a professional bicycle shop mechanic at least twice a year. They would be able to check brakes, tire tread, chain, battery and gears (if applicable) are in good working order.

Storage

Proper storage is one of the most important parts of maintaining equipment. eRideables left outside can become damaged by the weather, and that’s a waste of anyone’s money. Rain can cause components to seize, begin rusting, ruin the battery and trigger mold growth on plastic and materials attached to the eRideable. The sun can do damage as well, causing cracking and fading. Winds can throw loose items against your electric toy, potentially breaking components or at least denting them.

Thanks to Mother Nature’s quirks, you shouldn’t leave your eRideables outside ever. If you want to keep your eRideable equipment safe, bring it inside and put it somewhere out of the way. If you leave it in a shed or covered porch, make sure it’s out of direct sunlight and protected from moisture.

Maintaining your eRideable is necessary if you want to keep enjoying your adult toys for months and years to come. By following the above tips, you can prolong the life of your favorite SWAGTRON product, whether its an electric scooter, eBike, hoverboard or electric skateboard.

Why Fold? 4 Reasons Why Your Next Electric Bike Should be Foldable https://swagtron.com/news/4-reasons-why-your-next-electric-bike-ebike-should-be-foldable/ Fri, 20 Nov 2020 20:22:12 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=531944 There’s plenty to consider when buying an eBike. Maybe you’re looking for a commuter model that can go the distance, or perhaps you want a fat-tire eBike capable of handling the roughest of roads. One consideration that should top the list, however, is whether to go foldable or stay expansive — and there are seriously convincing reasons to go with the more carry-friendly option.

Beyond merely looking cooler, foldable eBikes are redefining the riding experience by amplifying the benefits of getting around on an electric bike and introducing entirely new ones.

Let’s get you caught up on the unique perks of our foldable eBikes — and why you should have one in your sights right about now.

1. Easy Portability

We all know it’s more convenient to ride somewhere than walk, but the biggest worry is what to do with your bike during the short bursts when it’s not suitable to ride it. This could be something like going up and down stairs. Or perhaps taking a bus into the city or hopping on the train. A foldable electric bike completely solves that, making sure the weight is evenly balanced for easy and comfortable carrying.

You no longer have to worry about accidentally poking an innocent passerby, because with a package that compact, you’re only taking up your fair share of space, even in a crowded train station.

The EB7 Plus and the EB5 Pro Plus are both designed especially with foldable portability in mind. Both have an integrated carry handle that makes carrying the eBike a lot easier.

Split image of the EB7 Plus being carried (left) and the EB5 Pro Plus (right) being folded.
The EB Plus and the EB5 Pro Plus—two SWAGTRON eBikes that fold for convenience.

2. Better Storage

There just doesn’t seem like there’s enough space to spare nowadays.

Foldable eBikes help solve this problem too. In their folded state, they essentially take up half the space you’d otherwise need to leave clear in your garage or apartment.

That’s true for the bus or train, too, where you wouldn’t want to inconvenience your fellow commuters by taking up more than your allotted share. With a foldable eBike, you minimize the amount of space you’re occupying — staving off disapproving looks.

Once you get to the office, foldability is just as useful. Whether you’re a little low on space or having your bike feature too prominently in your office isn’t a good look, the ability to tuck it away as a neat, inconspicuous unit is always welcome.

And don’t forget how easy it is to stash your bike in the car. With the way many of our eBikes fold, like the EB5 Pro Plus, there’s no trouble fitting them into some of the smallest trunks out there, like that little gas-saving Prius you’ve been eyeing. Even something as massive as the EB8 Fat-Tire All-Terrain Electric Bike can be folded down to fit a compact sized trunk.

Split image of the EB5 Pro Plus (left) folded in the trunk and the EB8 Fat-Tire eBike (right) folded in a trunk.
Foldable eBikes, like our EB5 Pro Plus and the EB8 eBikes, make it easier to travel with.

3. Constant Adventure Readiness

Driving along, it’s not uncommon to see something that piques your interest — perhaps a trail that looks particularly inviting. Your car won’t make it far off-road, but the eBike in the trunk can. And the model best able to handle that kind of terrain while still fitting in the trunk is the EB8 foldable fat-tire eBike

When spontaneous calls to adventure arise, a foldable eBike makes it much easier to indulge your exploratory mood, hop on the trails and conquer them. After all, it’s simply a matter of popping the trunk open, pulling your eBike out and unfolding it, and seeing what adventure you can find.

Adventure awaits! Grab a foldable eBike and be ready at a moment’s notice!

4. Easier Exercise

Finding the time or motivation to fit exercise into your routine isn’t always the easiest thing to do. When you inject some fun into it — think foldable eBike now — you massively increase the odds that you’ll stick with the program. The benefits include increased health and greater fitness.

Unlike many forms of exercise, riding outside keeps things fresh by letting you explore a new and exciting environment every day. That’s, of course, easier with an electric bicycle. Consider going up a hill, for example, and how it’s not the slightest bit intimidating once you have two electric-powered wheels at your bidding.

If you’re looking to burn off calories and improve your cardio while having so much fun, it doesn’t feel like exercise, it doesn’t get better than a foldable eBike. At any moment, you and your trusty steed are ready to go. And when you’re done, fold it up and put it in your pocket — well, it’s not that compact, but close!

Now that you’ve heard the case for choosing a foldable eBike there’s really no reason to keep comparing. The take-me-anywhere portability, fits-there-too storage versatility and broader lifestyle benefits simply do justice to themselves. Browse through the options on offer and make these benefits yours.

Staying Active, Commuting and eRiding During COVID-19 https://swagtron.com/news/staying-active-riding-hoverboard-electric-bike-scooter-during-covid-19/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 19:25:17 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=531650 Breathing in energizing fresh air, getting a good workout to keep the body in top condition and experiencing the world around you — you already know these are essential to your well-being. Getting out and riding your LEV (light electric vehicle) during COVID-19 can help you tap into the mood-lifting benefits of staying active, so you keep your spirits raised and your body fit. So this could be anything from your eBike to an electric scooter—even hoverboards and electric skateboards. These are all ways you can get out, stay active and having fun, even during these unprecedented times.

SWAG TIP: Remember to check with your local ordinances on their recommendations/requirements for safe social distancing and physical distancing. This includes curfews, mask mandates, etc. And continue to stay 6 feet from others when possible.

eBiking During COVID-19

If your main objective is to burn calories and break a sweat, an electric bike is simply unbeatable. Depending on how much you want to feel the burn (if at all), you can have the electricity provide a little more or less of the thrust.

First, you can pedal fast and furious to give your body a fitness-boosting workout. Then, as you catch your breath, you can cruise along, taking in the sights and letting the world outside work its cheer-giving magic. And “cruise along” is quite literal. Several SWAGTRON® eBikes, like the EB7 Plus and the EB5 Pro, have a cruise control function you can toggle to maintain a steady pace effortlessly.

Using your eBike to explore is an experience goldmine on its own. Sure, things have changed during these times. But you can still enjoy a ride around town, peppering your day with small, familiar moments to give it color.

The long-range EB7 Plus eBike is perfect for commuting and exploring.

Finding the space to fit your eBike and getting it to the outdoors is easy as you stay active during COVID-19. Folding eBikes are delightfully inconspicuous on the train, light and portable in hand, and rather unnoticeable at the office (until it’s time to go home).

And, hey, why not take this time to bike into areas of your town or city you’ve never visited before? You never know what hidden gems have been under your nose this whole time.

Physical Distancing on eScooters

Electric scooters are great for keeping your feet firmly planted while you feel the sensation of the wind against your face. Speed-wise, you can enjoy a range that starts at a perfectly adequate 6.2 mph and reaches an exciting 18 mph. That makes it convenient to pair your exercise or relaxation with running your errands, especially if adapting to COVID-19 has tightened your schedule.

Just lean forward, handlebars gripped, eyes focused, and zoom forward to your speed-craving heart’s content. Or you can ride at a more relaxed pace, letting the abundant fresh air fill your lungs, simply enjoying the outdoor atmosphere with a deeper sense of quiet.

Those benefits for the mind are half the experience. Your body takes part in the action, with one leg doing some amount of kicking if you prefer, and the other helping with stability.

Staying active is easy with the Swagger 7 eScooter with removable battery.

As you stand and keep your body aligned with your electric scooter, you may experience a gradual strengthening of your core. That’s a welcome benefit at this time, particularly if you’re spending more time than usual sitting at home.

What you’ll need to focus most on, however, is the actual “distancing” part of “physical distancing.” After all, your city might have specific guidelines on where you can ride an eScooter, e.g., sidewalk or bike lane or sharing the road. If you’re riding with friends, a lot of the time you’ll be riding single file. But don’t let that stop you!

Hoverboards: When You Need to Escape

Maybe you’re the type to give your feet all the control. In which case, do away with pedals and handlebars, and step right onto a hoverboard. Whether you’re heading out to satisfy your desire for fast movement or you prefer to crawl around and relax, speeds ranging between 6.8 and 12 mph make it all possible.

If, like most people, you’ve been sitting for longer than usual, standing while you ride on a hoverboard may help you maintain your posture. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself strengthening your core while having loads of fun with friends. And same as with electric scooters, you may have to deal with physical distancing concerns, especially if there’s a team of you and not a wide sidewalk to ride on. But once you get to an open space or park, that no longer matters!

Get Moving with Electric Skateboards

Step out on one of these, and you’re guaranteed fun. With a remote in hand to keep all the controls intuitive and close together, or simply with your feet giving all the commands, electric skateboards add their own spin to helping you experience the outdoors, also offering an alternative to eBiking during COVID-19.

Off-road models provide the right balance between support and adrenaline-pumping quivers if you enjoy the bumps of rough or hilly terrain.

Again, both mental and physical benefits are on the table here. For relaxation and a sense of calm, you can just ride with few turns or bends. To focus and give yourself a break from all that’s going on, try riding where you have to swivel and swerve, keeping the mind alert and focused.

AI-enabled models, such as the SWAGSKATE NG2, sense weight distribution, acceleration changes, and incline shifts, giving you a real sense of intelligent support and an overall richer experience.

COVID-19 has changed lifestyles to varying degrees. Thankfully, it’s possible to retain some control over how you feel and maintain your body. Nature and the free outdoors are still there, and SWAGTRON products are ready to liven up the experience. Look through the options and models and pick one to help you exercise and elevate your mood. It’s a double win.

How to Get the Most Out of Your eBike or eScooter Battery https://swagtron.com/news/get-the-most-out-of-electric-bike-escooter-battery/ Thu, 05 Nov 2020 18:45:56 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=529952 Whether you’re planning on taking your electric bike or electric scooter out for a long, scenic ride, you’ll want your battery to last as long as possible. The more powerful and resilient your battery is, the more you’ll be able to enjoy the adventure without worrying about problems — like pushing up that next hill.

Fortunately, there are many simple ways to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your eBike or eScooter battery. From maximizing its range to charging it properly, every step you take when caring for your battery is crucial to its effectiveness. Here are some guidelines to help you get started before you hit the road.

Check Your Tires

When it comes to boosting the range of your battery, one of the most important steps you can take is adjusting the tire pressure. Riding on flattened tires can make it seem like you’re slogging through mud, increasing the need for motor assistance. And overly pumped tires can feel like you’re riding on a washboard. Both of these situations can quickly take the fun out of your ride.

The recommended tire pressure range should be printed on the side of your tires, and you shouldn’t ever go over the maximum amount. But within that range, you have plenty of wriggle room, and different riding situations call for different adjustments.

Split-screen image with the EB7 Pro Plus (left) and the eBike display (right).
Split-screen image with the Swagtron EB7 Pro Plus Electric Bike (left) and the eBike display (right).
 • Road surface: Are you shredding downhill over roots and rocks on your SWAGTRON® EB6 Fat-Tire eBike, or are you taking the scenic rails-to-trails blacktop pathway? Basically, the rougher the road, the less tires pressure you need to help reduce vibration transfer.
 • Weight: OK, we won’t ask the exact number, but the more you weigh, the higher pressure you need.
 • Outdoor conditions: Wet roads can get slick. By lowering your tire pressure, you can increase the amount of rubber that connects with the road, giving a whole new meaning to “where the rubber meets the road.”

FURTHER READING: Learn more of why tire inflation is important here.

Charge Your Battery Immediately

Choosing the right time to charge your eScooter or eBike battery can boost its effectiveness dramatically. Generally speaking, it’s best to charge your battery as soon as you come home from a ride. This gives you plenty of time to fully replenish your battery before you take out your equipment for another ride.

Most eBike and eScooter batteries need at least three full hours to charge completely. Make sure that you leave yours plugged in long enough to keep your eRideable running at full capacity.

Use Manual Power

The type of power you use is another important factor in boosting battery life. It’s a good idea to use manual power as often as possible when riding your eBike as this can greatly extend the life of your battery. You were planning on burning some calories anyway, right?

However, manual power shouldn’t be relied on at all times. Be sure to switch to pedal-to-go (pedal assist) whenever you’re facing a particularly steep incline. Electric power gives you the strength needed to push through tough hills successfully and that’s what riding an electric cycle or scooter is all about. If you have an eBike with gear shifts — like our EB7 Plus eBike or EB11 Cruiser eBike with Shimano Gears — be sure to adjust the gear accordingly.

Electric bikes like the EB11 Cruiser eBike let you ride manually with no ePower.

Use the “Push-to-Start” Feature

If you’re looking for a quick and simple way to get the most out of your electric battery, check this out. Some SWAGTRON® eScooters, such as the Swagger 8 Foldable Electric Scooter, include a “push-to-start” feature, which can give you 10-25% more range off of your battery.

Once you engage the push-to-start mode, your eScooters’s motor becomes motion-activated. When you reach speeds of 1.8 miles per hour via manual power, the electric motor turns on. This feature helps cut down on battery power significantly by ensuring that the motor only runs when it needs to.

Choose eBikes or eScooters With Replaceable Batteries

You can optimize your battery use by choosing eBikes or eScooters that come with replaceable batteries. This makes it easy for you to switch out your power supply if it’s drained or isn’t living up to its full potential. With these rideables, we took great pains to engineer efficient batteries that can fit in your backpack or messenger bag.

Many of our eScooters and eBikes come with replaceable batteries. For example, the Swagger 7 Folding Electric Kick Scooter includes a removable battery and a dual brake system to help make every ride more enjoyable.

Another eBike model with a replaceable battery is the EB5 Pro Plus Folding City & Campus eBike. This bike’s removable battery has a convenient carry handle for effortless transportation and storage. Switching out your battery whenever necessary is easier than ever with this model.

Examples of eRideables with removable batteries: the Swagger 7 eScooter and the EB5 Pro Plus eBike.

To find the right eBike or eScooter with a removable battery, be sure to explore all of your options and carefully consider every feature. eBikes and eScooters come with several useful add-ons to help enhance your riding experience while allowing you to extend your battery life.

Boost the Lifespan of your eBike or eScooter Battery

Taking proper care of your bike and following these guidelines can help you get the most out of your eScooter or eBike battery. No matter which model you choose, it’s crucial to explore all of its features to ensure that you’re getting maximum enjoyment from your electric ride.

Which Are the Best Electric Bikes to Buy? https://swagtron.com/news/which-are-the-best-ebikes-to-buy/ Tue, 27 Oct 2020 20:28:56 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=529152 The way you intend to use an eBike is your most important consideration when deciding which electric bike to buy. Are you a mountain maniac, cycling off-road as a form of exercise or adventure? Do you use your eBike to commute to school or work, saving pennies and the environment? Or, maybe you’re just a great parent and are planning on surprising your child with an electric bicycle for their birthday.

In this article, we examine all these use cases to help you figure out which eBike you should buy based on your needs. But first, here’s a quick summary if you’re in a hurry.

 • Commuting: EB7 Plus, EB5 Pro Plus
 • Off-roading: EB8 Fat-Tire All-Terrain & EB6 Fat-Tire Off-Road
 • Seniors: EB9 Step-Thru
 • Teens: swagCYCLE PRO; EB5 Pro Plus; EB6 Off-Road
 • Younger Teens: swagCYCLE Classic, swagCYCLE Envy

Let’s take a closer look at each of these options.

Commuting

If you plan to cycle to work or school but don’t live around the block, it’s a good idea to get an eBike that’s comfortable with enough power to cover the distance. Two electric bicycles that fit this need are the EB7 Plus and the EB5 Pro Plus.

The EB7 Plus has three riding modes to pick from for a comfortable and sweat-free ride home: pedal-to-go electric-assist, full throttle, and pedal-only. And it has the benefit of Shimano®‘s gear speed system, which helps it deliver even more control to your ride.

And if you’re short on space or just need a little more portability, both the EB5 Pro Plus and EB7 Plus are foldable and feature removable batteries. Grab an extra battery and keep it with you and you’ll never be caught off-guard, wishing you had extra juice.

Off-Roading

Off-road eBikes give you a chance to explore your adventurous side in a fun, inexpensive way. In case you get left behind by over-eager friends, you want an eBike with a throttle mode that enables you to catch up quickly. With these considerations in mind, we recommend the SWAGTRON EB8. Powerful 350-watt motor. Extra-wide, deep tread tires. 20-inch wheels. Removable battery. Shimano® gear system. It’s easy to believe how the EB8 can help you cycle confidently over bumpy terrain.

For younger riders—or smaller riders—the EB6 All-Terrain eBike has similar specs as the EB8, but with a slightly smaller frame. We’ll talk more about them in a bit.

Seniors or Anyone with Mobility Concerns

The SWAGTRON EB9 Step-Thru is just right for seniors. Among the biggest concerns for seniors are ease of use and safety, although looks count too. For this reason, the best eBikes for seniors have a step-through frame that makes it easy to get on and off the bike, even with limited mobility and agility.

The frame construction of the SWAGTRON EB9 Step-Thru is a huge plus for seniors, making the eBike simple to manage, even if they have little experience operating one. Its layout is not too different from that of a traditional bike, so the EB9 has a familiar feel to it. Handling is easy because of the ergonomic way the pedals and central bar are positioned. This bike is popular among seniors, whether they’re effortlessly cruising the streets or keeping up with the grandkids.

Use the adjustable handle to choose a height that suits you and carry your handbag or backpack along on the multifunction rear rack. You never know when you’re going to need to splurge on ice cream.

Teens

Electric bikes are a godsend to teens. A car might be out of their price range, but an eBike is an affordable solution that gives teens the ability to commute to and from school, visit famil and friends, and just get out and enjoy the world around them. Plus, eBikes are a fun, affordable option. Any of the swagCYCLE Pro, EB5 Pro Plus, or EB7 Plus models are great choices for teens for various reasons. And there are even recertified models available that make it even more affordable.

The scooter-like swagCYCLE Pro has a sturdy aluminum frame for durability. It’s pedal-free, which makes it feel more like a seated electric scooter with a bicycle form. The EB5 Pro Plus, in contrast, is a bike through-and-through. It features a 250-watt battery that helps it power up to 15.5 mph on throttle alone—even faster when you engage the pedal assist. Or you can turn off the battery completely and ride it like a traditional bicycle.

Solid eBike choices for teens: the EB7 Plus (left), the EB5 Pro Plus (center) and the swagCYCLE Pro (right).

Teens who like the off-road experience are likely to prefer our EB6 Fat-Tire All-Terrain eBike. Powerful, high-torque 350-watt motor. Three riding modes (throttle, pedal-only and pedal-to-go). Removable battery. Shimano® gears and disc brakes. And 4-inch thick, deep tread tires that help you conquer almost any trail. It’s a favorite among teens, who even use the EB6 as a commuter bike.

Younger Teens

If you have younger school-age children, check out the pedal-less eBikes. These types of rideables require little effort or prior experience with eBikes, so the young ones can still have fun while learning to ride. Because they are throttle-only, they feel more like seated eScooters than eBikes, but they have that eBike feel. From the O.G. swagCYCLE Classic to the swagCYCLE Envy. These eBikes tend to have lower top speeds, so many parents feel more comfortable giving these to their younger teens.

Regardless of which eBike type you’re interested in, determining which are the best eBikes to buy comes down to a few basic principles. Look for a well-known brand with a good warranty at a reasonable price. After that, it’s all smooth cruisin’ from there.

6 Must-Know Tips for Staying Fit with an Electric Bike https://swagtron.com/news/6-must-know-tips-stay-fit-with-ebike/ Tue, 27 Oct 2020 20:01:44 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=529137 Despite what some naysayers might, erm . . . say, riding an electric bike can have a marked improvement on your cardiovascular health and fitness level. Just because the motor is there to help you doesn’t in any way play down the fact that you’re moving body parts and breathing fresh air by the lungful. If you’ve just purchased an eBike or are looking for new fitness strategies incorporating your old electric bicycle, check out these six recommendations.

1. Use an eBike as Part of Your Daily Commute

If you usually travel to work by car, choosing to ride a commuter electric bike instead not only helps the environment, it helps you stay fit. Unless you’re working from home, in which case an eBike down the stairs is less convenient.

Still, for all other purposes, eBikes are a great transportation option that lets you keep active while the attached motor gives a bit of help when needed. Riding an eBike also means not working as hard you would a regular bike, so there’s a lot less sweat. (Even better, no head-to-toe Lycra.) Trust us: your colleagues will thank you.

The EB7 Plus eBike is the perfect option for commuters. With its 7-speed Shimano® gear system, it delivers a solid riding experience that matches what you’d get with a traditional bike—only with an electric boost when you want it or need it.

2. Replace Your Regular Bike With an eBike

If you use a regular bike as part of your exercise routine, you can immediately switch it with an eBike and still gain the benefits of cycling. You don’t need to use the motor all the time. You can use an eBike to ride along cycle paths (check local laws, though), around the yard or along the street. If you are into street riding, the motor definitely comes in handy while going up steep hills, especially if you are just starting your fitness journey. SWAGTRON’s® EB11 electric cruiser comes with a Shimano® 7-speed gear system and 26-inch wheels, just the perfect new toy to take Old Faithful’s spot in the garage.

3. Take a Ride With Your Kids

Keeping up with your kids while bike riding is much easier on an eBike. Take it from us — when you hit 35, it’s easy to strain your neck just by getting out of bed. When you have high-speed children, it gets harder to stay ahead of them. Using an eBike, like the SWAGTRON EB9 Step-Through, means you can rely a little more on the motor and not on your own quads to keep moving — and it’s easy to mount!

4. Track Your Activity

When trying to stay fit, it’s important to track your calorie intake and your physical activity. If you’re at the stage of weighing your food and writing it down, you know how much of a pain it is. Six almonds, anyone?

Components of your physical activity, like your calorie expenditure, your heart rate, oxygen level and effort used, are much, much harder to track. But they’re essential because they can show you the areas you need to focus on, such as improving your breathing or going faster, so you burn more calories. No matter what you need to track, there’s an accessory or app that can do the job. So, strap on your watch or mobile phone, hop on your eBike and start watching those numbers.

SWAG TIP: Most eBikes will have some means of tracking your distance, either through an on-bike display, an app, or both. All of our electric bikes have an on-bike display.

Close-up of the SWAGTRON eBike speedometer.

5. Take a Trip to the Grocery Store

More often than not, we simply jump in the car and head to the local store when we need a gallon of milk. You see the chips that are on sale and a few other things, and before you know it, there are a dozen other things in the cart — most of them high caloric; after all, no one suddenly succumbs to a sale on Brussels sprouts.

An eBike makes you really think about whether you need that extra packet of cheese, remember you’re carrying it home. Put your helmet on, grab a backpack and ride to the store. You’ll find that not only will you have gotten in a bit of exercise for the day, but you’ve also enjoyed some fresh air and sun. Fewer groceries = less money spent = healthier choices.

6. Plan a Cycling Tour

Cycling tours are not only a great form of exercise, but they also allow you to see landmarks and nature while traveling unconventionally. Small back-country roads hold no fear when you’re using an eBike instead of a regular bike. You don’t have to dread those slight undulations called hills by all but the most zealous bikers. You can get a lot of help climbing from your battery, although you’re going to need to put forth some effort yourself. And if you’re on flat roads … well … you can simply go further and a little faster. Add a cargo rack, and your eBike can even handle extra luggage.

Closeup of the cargo rack of electric bike.
Some of the SWAGTRON eBikes have a rear cargo rack, for your convenience.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Rely on E-Power Alone!

You want to get the most out of any exercise routine. And, when it comes to an eRideable like an eBike or electric scooter, you also want to get the most out of your rideable’s battery. While it’s very tempting to go all-electric and rely solely on the electric throttle, that’s a surefire way to quickly drain the eBike’s battery and burn the absolute minimum calories. Instead, make sure you have an electric bike with pedal assist or some form of pedal-to-go function. That way, you’re putting in some work, reaping the benefits and taking it easy on the battery.

eBikes are fantastic for those wanting to stay fit or those just starting on their fitness journey. If you add the tips above into your daily behavior, you can start getting healthier and have fun doing it.

What Everyone Should Know Before Buying an Electric Bike? https://swagtron.com/news/what-everyone-should-know-before-buying-ebike/ Thu, 22 Oct 2020 19:13:57 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=528739 Cycling is more than just a recreational pursuit; it is also a green transportation option and a great workout. While traditional bikes get the job done, they’re not always practical for longer travel. Can you say burning thighs? Conventional cycles also represent issues with accessibility for those that cannot physically pedal for long distances.

Enter the eBike, a combination of function and fun. Electric bikes come in a variety of styles, from easily foldable commuter models to larger-framed designs built for endurance. Plus, electric bike storage and maintenance is way more practical than cars.

But with so many product options, it can be hard to know where to start. Here are a few things you need to know before buying an electric bike.

What Is an Electric Bike?

Simply put, it is a traditional bicycle with motorized capabilities. The design of the cycle may vary depending on the manufacturer. However, the concept is essentially the same as a traditional cycle, with two wheels, handlebars and pedals. The difference with an eBike is the electric motor that propels the bike, the more sophisticated gear shift system and the customization of the tires. These eBike features let you enjoy more uses, from pedaling or using the motor, taking the bike off-road or choosing a model meant for longer distances.

Benefits of Buying an Electric Bike

Electric bikes offer all the benefits of traditional cycles with none of the drawbacks. Want to pedal to burn calories and bring on the sweat? Hop on your eBike, leave the motor off and enjoy the workout. Want to tool along enjoying the scenery, effortlessly getting from one point to another? Switch on the motor and let it do the work for you.

It’s all a matter of choice as the motor gives you options regarding how hard you want to work. Batteries are rechargeable and cover a significant amount of ground on one charge. For example, the SWAGTRON® EB12 Classic City eBike is a full-sized cycle with a traditional design with a 250W motor and Shimano® gear speed system. Combined, this makes for an easy and efficient ride that’s also environmentally friendly.

Have eBike, Will Travel

Use an electric bike anywhere you would a traditional one, first, checking local and state laws, which can vary according to eBike definitions and permissions. Enjoy challenging city or trail rides, combining pedal and motor to control physical exertion. If you’re a bike commuter, use an eBike to reduce your carbon footprint. Traversing sprawling college campuses? The lightweight and sleek design of the EB5 Pro Plus Folding City and Campus eBike folds easily for transportation and storing, providing solid portability without the campus parking headache .

Motors Matter

It might seem strange to be talking motors and bicycles in the same sentence. But motor choice matters when buying an electric bike. For example, if yours is a mountain style, then you likely plan to travel across some complex off-road trails. Choose a bike with a strong motor so you can make the ascent. Trail enthusiasts do best with the 350W high-torque motor on the EB8 off-road electric bike, as well as the fatter tires. But if yours is a city-dwelling eBike, then you may not need as powerful a motor, especially if you plan to combine motorized transit with pedaling.

Be a Choosy Consumer

An electric bike purchase should be seamless and informative. Opt for brands that tell you exactly what the bike is all about. The more informative the product descriptions, the more informed a consumer you will be when making a final decision. If you’ve never purchased this type of cycle, then brands with more extensive catalogs are ideal. Remember, reputable eBike brands want you to know exactly what you are getting into before you make a purchase. Look for reliable brands with good warranties.

Electric Bike Maintenance

Electric bike maintenance consists of a few routine steps to extend the life of the cycle. By completing these regularly, you can limit the need for service calls.

 • Avoid eBike storage in extreme heat or cold for prolonged periods.
 • Charge batteries after each cycle use.
 • Wipe down the bike with a low-grade cleanser to keep it looking fresh.
 • Lubricate the chain to avoid rust build-up and keep the tires properly inflated.
 • Check the brakes regularly and

If you’re worried about how your bike is performing, take it to an electric bike professional for a routine check. Proper eBike maintenance can significantly extend your bike’s life and ensure many more miles of smooth rides.

Now that you’re up on everything eBikes, make a list of all the reasons you want one. Then figure out your budget. Once you start looking, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to whittle down your choices to what suits your needs and your wallet.

5 Simple Steps to Keep Your eBike in Tip-Top Shape https://swagtron.com/news/5-simple-steps-keep-your-electric-bike-in-tip-top-shape/ Wed, 15 Jul 2020 20:27:27 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=499310 Read More]]> Ask the owner of any vehicle used for transportation what the most important part of ownership is, and you’ll probably get a familiar answer: Maintenance, maintenance, and maintenance! Just like a car or a boat, proper servicing is critical when you own any kind of bicycle. And eBike maintenance is by far the easiest way to keep your bike operational for years to come.

If you’re new to the electric bike world, you might be wondering how to service your electric bicycle and how it differs from caring for a traditional bicycle. Don’t worry; we have all the info you need right here.

 1. Maximize Your Battery Life
 2. Find a Trusted Repair Shop for eBike Maintenance
 3. The Chain Is Crucial
 4. Take Care of the Tires
 5. Inspect Your Brakes

Read on to find out how you can service your eBikes properly:

Keep your electric bike in tip-top shape with these standard tips.

Maximize Your Battery Life

Are you worried about overcharging your battery and making it useless? Don’t sweat it. There’s no chance that you can overcharge your battery, and lithium batteries are made to be charged over and over before they begin to wear down. Your lithium battery should last for about 1,000 charges before it starts to wear out, so if you’re riding twice a week, you’re going to get a lot of use out of your battery before you even have to think about changing it.

You’ll want to only charge the battery in good weather and store it properly when you aren’t charging it. If you leave it out on an excessively hot or cold day, you’ll limit the battery life and won’t get anywhere near the performance that you should. Be sure to find a safe, temperature-controlled place to store your battery; it should stay there whenever your eBike isn’t operating or charging.

Close-up of a man removing the swappable battery of his EB11 Cruiser eBike.
Swappable batteries of eBikes like the EB10 or EB12 make battery maintenance a lot easier.

PRO-TIP: Do not overcharge the battery. Keep close tabs on it while you’re charging and remove the battery from the charger when it’s topped off. Most batteries take anywhere from three to five hours. So no leaving it plugged in overnight!

Many SWAGTRON electric bikes, such as the EB7 Pro Plus, the EB9 and EB12 (among others), have removable batteries that makes keeping tabs on your battery temperature super easy. And if you find that after a year or two of consistent, daily rides, your battery simply isn’t holding a charge — no worries! You can simply buy a new, replacement battery. No need to spend money on an entirely new electric bicycle!

Find a Trusted Repair Shop for eBike Maintenance

Over time, you’re going to need to make repairs to your electric bike. It’s tempting to try to handle the repairs on your own and save some money, but the reality is that the short-term financial benefit can be offset by the long-term cost of voiding your warranty.

Unless you’re certain your eBike is out of warranty, it’s not a good idea to try to perform repairs on your own. Instead, you should check with your manufacturer’s customer service department and ask them for repair shop recommendations.

If you’ve purchased your bike from SWAGTRON®, you’re in luck. Our live-chat service can help you find an authorized repair dealer in your area within minutes.

Once you find an approved repair shop that you trust, head there for all but the most basic eBike maintenance needs. Bottom line: If it’s more complicated than lubricating your chain or adding air to your tires, it’s best left to a professional repair shop.

The Chain Is Crucial

Close-up of the rear wheel and chain of the EB11 Cruiser eBike.
The chain of your electric bike is just as important as the chain on a traditional bike.

Just like with a traditional bike, if you don’t take care of your chain on an eCycle, you’re going to run into a lot of problems in a hurry. Your chain needs to be cleaned and lubricated on a regular basis, and the good news is that it’s a rather easy task.

All you have to do is wipe off your chain with a clean, dry cloth and then add lubricant to each link in the Follow up by wiping off the chain again to ensure that you didn’t add too much lubricant. The right amount of lubricant is vital to your eBike’s health — if you put too much on, you can create a real mess. That’s because all of that lubricant can attract dirt, grime and other roadside particles that you don’t want on your chain.

Because it’s so easy to make a mistake, caring for your chain can be a time-consuming process. That said, it’s well worth it to ensure that your electric bicycle isn’t afflicted with a rusting chain!

Take Care of the Tires

Some cyclists tend to stick to flat, well-paved roads, while others prefer rugged terrain. When it comes to caring for your tires, it doesn’t matter what kind of terrain you prefer; you’ve got to make sure to keep your tires properly inflated and ready to grip the surface.

Regardless of what surface you ride on, your tires will wear down over time just like they do on a car. The easiest way to prevent a flat is to visually inspect your tires each and every time that you ride your electric bicycle. Be sure to press gently on your tire and take note of whether its shape holds or it starts to flatten out. A flat tire yields with gentle pressure, so if your tire has too much give, you need to add air.

Close-up of man squeezing front tire of the EB9 to check inflation.
Checking tire inflation is important for maintaining your eBike.

One key thing to remember: Just because your tire might be underinflated once doesn’t necessarily mean that the tire is damaged. As temperatures change, so does the PSI inside your tires. So if both tires are a bit underinflated on a cold morning, you probably don’t have much to worry about. But if one tire is continually underinflated while the other one isn’t, it’s probably time to turn eBike maintenance into a tire replacement.

PRO-TIP: Always follow your eBike’s manual for appropriate tire pressure. Do not rely on the PSI/BAR that’s embedded on the tire itself. That number represents the maximum the tire can hold safely. But “maximum” does not mean “optimal.” When in doubt, follow your eBike’s user manual.

Inspect Your Brakes

I’m sure we all agree that being able to stop is much more important than being able to go. And, being able to stop quickly is only possible if your brakes are in top working order. Learn how to inspect your brakes and spot a problem before things get out of hand. SWAGTRON eBikes with manual brakes have a couple ways to adjust them with just your hand or a wrench. But not all electric bikes are built with that same focus on user-friendly design.

As always, if you don’t feel comfortable adjusting your eBike’s brakes, find a local bicycle shop.

To test your brakes, try rocking your electric bicycle back and forth and seeing if you have any unexpected parts that come loose. If anything starts to wiggle, you might have an issue with your brakes, especially if the wiggling comes from the bike’s calipers. You don’t want to end up with your rotors rubbing against the calipers.

Close-up of someone using an Allen wrench to tighten the brakes of a standard bicycle.
Check your electric bike brakes regularly and tighten when needed.

Give your wheels a spin to make sure the brake pads aren’t dragging on the rims, and check that the pads aren’t worn down or dirty (a common cause of squealing). Always give both brakes a good squeeze to make sure they’re working before starting out.

As long as you’re taking proper care of your eBike, it’s going to be one of the best purchases that you’ll ever make. Maintenance of eBikes isn’t difficult as long as you take the time to examine your bike regularly. On larger repair issues, always take your eBike to a trusted, warranty-authorized shop. Remember, taking care of small problems early on helps keep them from growing into big headaches later.

Electric Bikes vs. Regular Bikes https://swagtron.com/news/electric-bikes-versus-regular-bikes/ Fri, 10 Jul 2020 19:10:10 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?p=498914 Nearly noiselessly, electric bikes are starting to transform personal transportation across the world. These quiet and surprisingly swift devices have become a primary commute option in many areas of Asia, and the total market is valued at an estimated $15.42B worldwide. Why are electric bikes taking a dominant role in personal transportation? Several reasons:

 • Ecological concerns. As more people and governments adopt cleaner environmental policies, the need for clean transportation grows. eBikes offer an efficient and cost-effective solution.
 • Scarcity of natural resources. Older methods of transportation use valuable natural resources like steel and gas, but these are non-renewable materials that may not be available to future generations.
 • Traffic. Waiting for an hour while emergency vehicles clear up the debris from an accident is an everyday experience, but one most could do without. Also, the resulting smog is a problem that bikes don’t have.

So, what makes eBikes better than traditional bicycles? That depends on who you ask.

Why Walk When You Can Bike

Split screen of woman riding an EB5 Pro Plus electric bike (left), photos of the handlebar and the rear wheel of the EB5 Pro Plus ebike.
An electric bike like the EB5 Pro Plus can help you cover more ground, quicker with less effort and population.

A standard bike can dramatically increase your ability to cover ground in a hurry. Sure, maybe you only live 5 miles from work, but that still means more than an hour walking, even if you hit a seriously brisk pace. On a bike, you can cover 5 miles in less than half an hour. According to Road Bike Rider, a pace of 13.5 mph is pretty reasonable to expect from a beginner cyclist.

Of course, if you’ve ever stepped off the treadmill at the gym, certain you were about to make a run for the trashcan, that number might seem a little high. Also, flat ground is a friend to bikers everywhere, but it often seems in short supply when you’re riding. For newbies just starting to get into cycling, hills and challenging terrain can turn even a short ride into an endurance test.

Traditional bikes use a basic pedal system to provide all of the forward momentum. Yes, that means you have to pedal to get anywhere and pedal hard when heading uphill. There’s no motor and no external power source with a traditional bike. Sure, the pedal system and wheels turn less force into more motion, making it quicker to bike than to walk, but you’ll still arrive at work drenched in sweat.

Work Smarter, Not Harder With an Electric Bike

With an eBike, you get a lot of the same benefits with a lot less work. Riding an eBike is like being on a traditional bike with an extra (probably younger) pair of legs to handle the hills. An eCycle is outfitted with a battery, motor and drive system to turn electricity into a power source that can work with your legs. Whether you’re looking for a senior-friendly transportation option, like the SWAGTRON® EB12 City Road eBike, to cut down on your morning commute without adding to your carbon footprint, electric bicycles might be the way to go.

Are Traditional Bikes Better in Any Category?

Traditional bikes are lighter than the e-powered versions. With a manual bike, you can expect to heft around 17-18 pounds. So, don’t expect to hit the road right after abdominal surgery, but the low weight does make standard bikes fairly maneuverable.

Electric bikes, on the other hand, typically weigh in at around 45-55 pounds. If that sounds like a lot, just remember that the battery alone might weigh as much as the entire bike frame. Of course, as long as you’re not running out the battery while on the road, the weight of an electric bike doesn’t really matter. It’s not like you plan to carry the bike around. That’s the bike’s job. If you do run out of power with no way to charge the battery, the weight might become a real drag.

Pedaling 50 pounds up a hill takes a lot more effort than handling 20 pounds. Pay attention to the battery life and plan your trips to stay within range. You don’t want to be like the person trudging to a gas station to sheepishly fill up a canister for the car — or the person huffing and puffing home on top of a bike that suddenly weighs a lot more than you’re used to.

A lightweight, folding eCycle may be your best option if you want a little more portability. SWAGTRON’s EB5 Pro Plus has the power to take you all around town, and, weighing only 37 pounds, it can be toted up to your apartment for safekeeping.

Electric or Manual: What’s Your Preference?

Ultimately, choosing the right bike has a lot to do with personal preference. If you cycle for fun and don’t have a set time or track, a standard bike might work for you. If you want to leave the car in the garage on the regular, an electric bike is faster and less likely to leave you sweaty at work.
