Walmart’s online store puts SWAGTRON in the spotlight, as well. The product descriptions are just as educational as Amazon’s, and color options are available. Added benefits on Walmart.com include:

Walmart’s online market is very similar to Amazon’s in that they also have resellers. These are third-part sellers that are not the manufacturer/brand that makes the product. If you’ve shopped on Amazon for any length of time, then you’re likely already used to seeing “sold by” with your purchase. When you see “sold and shipped by Walmart,” you know that is coming directly from Walmart; otherwise, you’ll see “sold and shipped by Company Name.” This means you’re getting your product from a third-party seller. Again, this is similar to what Amazon has been doing for years, but it’s something to take note of.

Can Hoverboards Go On Trails? https://swagtron.com/faq/can-hoverboards-go-on-trails/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 18:23:52 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?post_type=bwl_kb&p=550826 Read More]]> Closeup on guy standing on a T6 hoverboard on the grass.

Yes. Hoverboards can go on trails. But let’s be honest, you wouldn’t take your Prius on an off-road adventure, would you? Likewise, you want a monster hoverboard to ride the trails. Large, sturdy, grippy tires provide the traction you need to traverse dirt, gravel and grass terrain. Powerful motors are necessary to climb relatively steep inclines with ease.

Read on to find out what to look for when buying an all-terrain hoverboard.

Five Important Features for Off-Road Hoverboards

1. Tire Size

Your hoverboard needs tires that can handle dirt, grass, gravel, and mud to ride on trails. The larger the tire, the better, and the 6.5-inch tires on standard hoverboards won’t cut it. Look for hoverboard tires that are at least 8 inches to handle the rough terrain you find off-road.

2. Tire Material

Most standard hoverboards have solid rubber tires, which are fine if you ride on mostly even surfaces. If you plan to ride on trails, air-filled tires are the way to go. Unlike solid rubber tires, air-filled tires don’t lose stability and traction on terrain with dirt, grass and gravel.

3. Tire Tread Pattern

The uneven surfaces of trails call for better traction and stability. The tread pattern on off-road hoverboard tires is deep and staggered because grooved tires have the best grip. With these patterns, an all-terrain hoverboard can maneuver over roots, rocks and thick mud.

4. Motors

A hoverboard needs a relatively high-powered motor to push those rugged tires across the rough trail terrain. If you plan to take your hoverboard off-road, look for one with more than a 200W motor.

5. Water and Dirt Protection

A hoverboard that rides on trails should be able to take a beating and survive getting wet and dirty. At the very least, the IP rating of an off-road hoverboard should be IPX4. This rating shows that the hoverboard was built to withstand contact with water and dirt.

The board’s grippy wheels help it move over uneven trail terrain, including grass, mud and gravel. It can handle riders up to 420 pounds.

With two powerful 300W motors, the T6 can accelerate up to 12 mph and climb an incline of up to 30 degrees. It can go for up to 12 miles on a full charge, and it takes about three hours to recharge. Hoverboard — also commonly known as self-balancing boards—get you where you need to go without leaving you in need of a shower or change of clothes, and you’ll have a lot of fun getting there. Once you’re more of a pro, you can even do some sick tricks. But you gotta start somewhere. So might as well start at the beginning, in other words, learning how to ride a hoverboard.

How Do You Ride a Hoverboard?

Admittedly, riding a hoverboard takes some getting used to. Stand on the footpads and adjust the board’s speed and direction by applying weight with your feet. With a little practice, you’ll get used to the balance and the feel of the board while it moves.

SWAG TIP: To help with balance, place the hoverboard next to a wall and use the wall to help you balance.

Remember: whether you’re new or a seasoned pro, it’s a great idea to wear protective gear while riding a hoverboard. Such gear includes an ASTM-approved helmet and age-appropriate elbow and knee pads. Many hoverboards, like the swagBOARD Classic T5, have various skill-level modes, including “Learning Mode” for beginners. Take advantage of this solid feature, which limits the upper speeds of the board while increasing its responsiveness for more control. Oh, and always make sure your hoverboard is fully charged.

Check out our previous article about how to find the perfect for helmets.

Three young males—from pre-teen to late teens—wearing helmets and standing on swagBOARD T5 hoverboards.

Don’t skip this step! Wearing a helmet can save lives!

Now let’s get ready to roll!

Getting On With It

To begin, follow these steps for getting onto a hoverboard:

 1. Place your hoverboard in a clear, open space and on a flat, even surface.
 2. Turn on the hoverboard before stepping onto it, so its balancing mechanisms are activated.
 3. Place your dominant foot on top of one of the pads over a wheel, keeping it flat without any tilt.
 4. Place your other foot on the hoverboard above the other wheel, so your feet are roughly hips-width apart, again keeping it flat.
 5. Stand straight and still while you get a sense of how to balance.

It’s Time to Move!

Once you feel comfortable with your balance, it’s time to move. The swagBOARD self-balances and moves because of dynamic equilibrium, generated by the shifting of your body weight. From there, an internal gyroscope with acceleration sensors moves the board based on your center of gravity.

How to ride a hoverboard infographic.

Forward and Backward

To move either forward or backward, lean very slightly in that direction by tilting your ankles rather than bending at your waist. It’s best not to tilt beyond 10 degrees.

Left and Right

SWAGTRON uses the “lean-to-move method” to move left and right. This method like the one that works best with SWAGTRON® hoverboards. This method is more intuitive than other methods and makes turning more straightforward.

Just remember to always slow down a little before you make your turn.

To go LEFT, lean a little to the left, shifting your weight slightly off the RIGHT pedal.

To go RIGHT, lean a little to the right and slightly shift your weight off the LEFT pedal.

Speed Up, Slow Down and Stop

Once you lean forward and start moving, your hoverboard keeps accelerating as long as you keep leaning forward. Most SWAGTRON® hoverboards—like the swagBOARD T5 Classic—have a Learning Mode that lowers the hoverboard’s maximum speed and decreases its sensitivity. This mode helps you get the hang of maneuvering your board—kind of like training wheels on a bike.
The swagBOARD T580 Warrior hoverboard.

The swagBOARD T580 Warrior Hoverboard!

If you don’t have a speed limit set, the board keeps going faster until it reaches the maximum speed. Many boards will give you a warning beep when you’re getting close to that speed. (That would be a good time to slow down a bit.)

To slow down so you can stop, just return to the upright, centered standing position. As you continue to lean back, your speed gradually decreases until you can step off. Remember to always step back off the board one foot at a time when dismounting. (Step off with your dominate foot first.) That way, you don’t end up in front of the board!

Hoverboards: Are They Worth It? https://swagtron.com/faq/are-hoverboards-worth-it/ Wed, 04 Nov 2020 19:50:11 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?post_type=bwl_kb&p=529865 Read More]]> Young girl holding up a SWAGTRON hoverboard over her head.

What kid watched “Back to the Future ll” and didn’t want a hoverboard? Well, the hoverboards of today don’t necessarily hover above the ground, but rather operate on a gyroscope and electric motor. But that doesn’t stop them from being fun. And when you look at the brand-new hoverboard lineup with the upgraded LiFePo™ battery and the exclusive music-synced ground effects (Warrior and Warrior XL), they’re even more fun than before—even without the actual hovering.

But are hoverboards worth it? We think so. Let’s review the facts.

4 Pros of Owning a Hoverboard

 1. Easy to operate: These boards respond to your every whim, sensing your movements forward and backward to control speed and direction.
 2. Shorten travel time: They range in speed from approximately 6 to 10 mph. No more calling for a ride to the bus stop.
 3. Save money on gas and insurance: Why hop in your car for a short-trip, quick errand when you can just hop on your electric scooters or hoverboards? Trust us: charging your eRideable is way cheaper than filling up with a tank of gas.
 4. Oh, so fun! What more can we say?

Now, many may argue that hoverboards are expensive, but that doesn’t have to be the case. SWAGTRON® has boards starting at around $150—some as low as $98 for a feature-heavy hoverboard for kids. And our recertified program gives you even more affordable options, guaranteed to work the same as buying new.

Where safety concerns come in, make sure you’re only buying a UL-certified hoverboard. This means that the products have been tested for safety risks by a third-party organization. SWAGTRON sells only UL-certified and compliant products, ensuring you the safest gear for your ride. At the end of the day, hoverboards may be considered adventuresome, but aren’t any more dangerous than rollers skates or skateboards. Just gear up with a helmet and use the board properly.

SWAG TIP: Upcoming swagBOARD models will have EXCLUSIVE LiFePo™ batteries. When used as intended, these batteries are noncombustible and nonflammable from puncture, damage or charging.

Types of Hoverboards

There are three main types of hoverboards, each with its benefits. Basically, it’s all a matter of what you’re looking for. Major hoverboard manufacturers, like SWAGTRON, have a range of options to meet different needs. We’ve broken down the features and costs here to help you decide:

 1. Classic: The SWAGBOARD Youth T5 Classic is a great example. These boards are ideal for beginners because of their smooth ride and less powerful motors. They can be purchased for an entry price between $150 and $200 and recertified ones are even less.Kid kneeling on a swagBOARD T5 Classic.
 2. Off-road: These hoverboards feature larger wheels and higher wattages to handle just about any terrain. The swagBOARD T6 Outlaw off-road hoverboard features 10-inch wheels and Bluetooth capabilities. This guy retails for around $400.Guy riding the swagBOARD T6 hoverboard on gravel.
 3. Auto Self-balancing: Included in this category is the swagBOARD T1 Sport Hoverboard (available recertified), one of our original and timeless hoverboards that has still racked up plenty of top honors, recently. Also included is the swagBOARD EVO hoverboard. Both models offer automatic balancing at startup. As soon as you power up the board, it “jumps” up, parallel to the ground and ready for the rider to hop on and zoom off. The self-balancing scooter offers newbies a smooth learning curve while providing a comfortable ride from the start.Closeup of a kid standing on the swagBOARD T1 Sport (red).

Hoverboard Maintenance

We’ve covered the types, costs and pros and cons of owning a hoverboard. Let’s take a look at maintenance. Proper, consistent maintenance will help the hoverboard keep up both appearance and performance and help it last longer.

 1. Regularly clean the wheels because the wheels are the most important part. Every time you use your board, dust and debris get stuck in between the wheels. Forgetting this step could interfere with the function of the motor because the wheels are connected to it. Use a soft brush to wipe them down after riding.
 2. Make sure your battery is fully charged before use, but don’t overcharge it. You should also make sure your battery is stored somewhere that isn’t too hot.
 3. Clean the board. This may seem obvious, but it’s more than just about the looks. Dirt and debris can clog the hoverboard and interfere with the sensors.
 4. Allow it to cool down. Like a cell phone, hoverboards can get overworked and heat up, too. So it’s important that you give it time to cool in between uses.
 5. Check the pedals before you ride to make sure they aren’t loose.
 6. If you’re not planning to ride your hoverboard for an extended period, make sure to store it in a cool, dry place that’s also dust-free. This will help to keep the board and battery in top shape.

How Much Does a Hoverboard Cost? https://swagtron.com/faq/how-much-does-hoverboard-cost/ Mon, 05 Oct 2020 18:52:45 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?post_type=bwl_kb&p=523591 Read More]]> Four-way image of the T6, T580 Twist, T580 Warrior and the T580 Warrior XL swagBOARDS.

Since their conception in the early 2010s, hoverboards have become a common sight, especially on YouTube fail channels. They typically consist of two motorized wheels connected to a pair of pads on which the rider places their feet. And it’s not surprising that they’re popular — how many articles have compared them to the ones from Back to the Future II? In the real world, several companies have been drawn into the hoverboard business to satisfy customer demand.

It’s easy to purchase a hoverboard right now, provided that your state doesn’t have laws that restrict their usage. One such company is SWAGTRON®, which has a wide range of prices, colors, designs, speed and lifestyle preferences. Other businesses include Segway and EPIKGO.

Hoverboard Pricing

A deciding factor for many customers is dollars spent, and there is a vast range of price points available. It’s a bit like shopping for cars: You have your lower-end Chevys, or you can go for something a little more special. At SWAGTRON, prices go as low as $79.99 or $84.99 for a recertified basic model — like the swagBOARD Twist T881 — or as high as $400 for a more top-of-the-range affair. The reason for such a vast difference in price is due to manufacturing costs, raw materials and whether the hoverboard has additional extras such as Bluetooth.

Kid wearing a helmet riding on a swagBOARD Twist T888 hoverboard.

However, models often go on clearance when the demand for them doesn’t meet expectations, or new models are introduced. Such models can be a good starting point for a beginner who doesn’t want to take the plunge by spending hundreds of dollars. So, if you’re a teenager who saved his lawn money for months on end, don’t worry: SWAGTRON has got you covered!

Maintenance Costs of Hoverboards

But the initial cost of a hoverboard isn’t the only expenditure. Often hoverboards need replacement parts, such as batteries or chargers. These can be bought from the official website, and it’s important to remember that certain chargers only work with specific models. For instance, replacement chargers generally only work with a few models — so you’ll need to pay careful attention when you’re purchasing one. If you need guidance, our customer service agents can help you with your SWAGTRON purchase.

All Those Little Extras

Another cost involves accessories, such as hoverboard bags — these vary significantly, from a humble backpack to a designated carry bag. Hoverboards are heavier than they look, so reduce the strain on your back and have somewhere safe to put it when heading out. A basic one can set you back around $25, but you can pay anything north of that. Another useful accessory is a handlebar such as the SWAGTRON T+ Hoverboard Handlebar for T3 and T380, which gives you extra balance and stability for around $30.

Guy standing next to the T380 with the T-Handlebar

Don’t Forget Safety Gear

Safety gear is a big one. Sure, it’s not as popular as it should be (scars are cool, right?), but it does keep you in once piece if someone just walks in front of you or if there’s an unexpected step or ridge that you simply don’t see.

Helmets can set you back anything from $20 all the way up to hundreds of dollars, depending on the branding and the amount of protection you get. On a hoverboard, side protection is a must, and chin protection is useful. The reason is simple: On a hoverboard, accidents sometimes happen from the side, and it’s definitely uncomfortable to hit railings with the side of your face.

Some people want to have the full set of safety gear, including a back protector, kneepads and elbow pads. For these, add on a hundred or so dollars.

What Sets One Hoverboard Apart from the Other?

Hoverboards have many options. Some tend to be big and shiny, while others are more minimalistic. For instance, the Swagboard Duro T8 Hoverboard is smaller in size compared to the Swagboard Elite Hoverboard. It’s all a matter of preference.

Speed is another factor, as different lifestyles (and your adrenaline tolerance) may require higher or lower speed limits. An amateur rider may prefer a lower speed of 6.8 mph, while experts can go up to 12mph. (Un)fortunately, there is no nitro option for hoverboards (yet). Battery life is also important, as no one wants to be stuck away from home without power.

The Bottom Line

When budgeting for your new electronic toy, remember the price of a hoverboard isn’t the only thing to consider. Safety gear, accessories and other items can add on a few hundred dollars, and then there’s the long-term cost of running the gadget. Plan for these extra necessities and then spend the rest on a model that fits your needs and lifestyle. You’ll be doing a one-eighty in no time.

Since the 2010s, the term hoverboard has become synonymous with the self-balance scooter, which was popularized by the movie franchise “Back to the Future” in the 80s and celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and rapper Soulja Boy more recently. Because who else to trust but your favorite celebrities?

Hoverboards have, however, been a subject of controversy, with some states outlawing their usage on public pavement or other non-road terrains. The reasons vary depending on the state, but the consensus is that they’re still a little too risky to be used as a personal transportation device.

Past Controversy Surrounding Exploding Hoverboards

Urban myths say that hoverboards are prone to catching on fire while charging or that they explode suddenly with no external influence. This controversy is likely the result of early units catching fire due to an overheated battery, which is a result of poor manufacturing. Because of this, laws regarding the manufacturing of hoverboards have become stricter, putting to rest these issues.

SWAGTRON hoverboards go through extensive testing before being sold, and faulty models won’t hit the shelves. Ordering from a reliable seller helps too. At SWAGTRON®, you as a customer can request a refund within 30 days of the delivery date, or repair or replace your hoverboard if the damage is not a result of misuse or modification. And even though he may look cute, your cat scratching it with its claws is not a legitimate claim for refund.

Sneak Peek: For SWAGTRON, #SafetyIsSWAG! To that end, we’ve developed a new battery technology that takes the battery-related reservations and squashes them. Be on the look out for updated hoverboards coming this holiday season with LiFePo™ battery technology.

Which States Allow Hoverboards?

Of all the U.S. states, California was the first to officially define, permit and regulate hoverboards. So let’s look at their regulations. California’s Assembly Bill No. 604, which passed in January 2016, requires owners of hoverboards to understand and follow certain rules, mainly:

 • Be 16 years or older.
 • Wear safety gear such as a helmet.
 • Ride on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less (15 mph or less if riding on public paths, roads, bikeways or trails).
 • Equip the hoverboard with a fixed lamp at night, one with white lights that are visible to approaching vehicles at a minimum distance of 300 feet.
 • Don’t operate under the influence of any drugs, including alcoholic drinks or pills (which is illegal).

Anyone who doesn’t follow these rules can be fined.

The bill also states that certain communities within California, such as San Clemente, Dana Point, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Manhattan Beach, may pass regulations restricting hoverboard usage. Universities and other educational institutions can also limit the use of hoverboards as they see fit.

Even though they’re not expressly banned from sidewalks, bikeways or recreational trails, local authorities may not allow it. So always check first. But that goes for anything in life.

The Issue of Hoverboards in Other States

Other states have followed California in defining and regulating hoverboards. This means that if you wish to buy a hoverboard for personal transportation use, you must check the local state law first. For instance, in the state of New York, NYC public officials have made hoverboards illegal under the New York State Traffic Law 114-d, which says that the use of “electronic personal assist devices” is strictly prohibited in public spaces. A spokesperson for the New York City Department of Transportation has said that hoverboards are part of the broader “electronic personal assistive mobility device” category and are regulated under the same law.

The Same Song and Dance

We’ve talked about the legalities of LEVs before — from electric bikes to electric scooters — and the common advice tends to be, Check with your local laws. Every state could have its own regulation for hoverboards. Beyond that, your city or municipality may have additional restrictions or requirements.

Additionally, you’ll want to make sure the intended rider falls within the safe weight range of the hoverboard — both min. and max. Minimum rider weight is usually around 55 lb., but the maximum riding capacity may be anywhere from 150 lb. to a whopping 420 lb., like with our massive swagBOARD T6 off-road hoverboard! This is important, because if your child is under the minimum weight limit, the pressure sensors will struggle to detect their weight. This will make it difficult to balance on.

Reminder: Performance-based specs, such as max. speeds and battery life, will be affected by rider weight. An adult weighing 220 pounds will drain the battery much faster than a kid that weighs 120 pounds.

As hoverboards become more common, especially among the millennial demographic, legislators will need to consider modifying the existing law to facilitate their usage. Of course, you can always enjoy them on your own piece of land. Hoverboards remain an effective and fun method of transportation, akin to roller blades or skateboards, and it’s likely that, as time passes, you will see greater freedom of usage. So strap on and float around town!

Bike Helmet Size Guide https://swagtron.com/faq/bike-helmet-size-guide/ Thu, 04 Apr 2019 15:22:14 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?post_type=bwl_kb&p=293252 Read More]]> Couple wearing helmets while riding Swagger 5 Elite

Riding an electric scooter or eBike is an exhilarating and empowering experience. Though exhilarating, riders should take precautions to minimize the possibility of injury. That means, always wearing protective gear when riding, especially certified bicycle helmet.

A Reminder on Bicycle Helmet Certification

There are organizations that inspect and rate helmets. Before buying a helmet, make sure to look for a seal of approval from one of these organizations:

 • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
 • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
 • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
 • Snell Memorial Foundation

Don’t see one of these seals on a helmet? Avoid like the plague!

Bike Helmet Size Guide

When buying a helmet, you might run across size designations, e.g., “small,” “medium,” or “large.” This doesn’t do us much good. So use the chart below to translate and grab the helmet size that perfectly matches your measurement.

General size parameters for helmets

How to Measure Your Head for Proper Helmet Sizing

You should always try on a bicycle helmet before buying it to make sure that it fits snugly yet comfortably and cannot move side to side. But this isn’t always possible, especially if you’re buying from an online vendor. For online purchases, you’ll want to find the proper size to buy. The best way to do this?

Wrap a flexible tape measure around the largest portion of your head, usually about 1 inch above your eyebrows. No flexible tape measure on hand? No problem! Wrap a string or ribbon around your head. Mark where the end of the string connects, then measure the string with a ruler.

Remember: The helmet should fit snugly with little-to-no movement once on the head. (But don’t make it so tight that it cuts off circulation.) So if you find that you’re between sizes, always opt for the smaller size.

And if buying for your child, take their measurements again every six months or so, depending on how fast they’re growing.

Proper Bicycle Helmet Fitting

Almost as important as the size of the helmet is how it positions on the head. The helmet should sit low and cover your forehead without obstructing your vision. You should only be able to fit one or two fingers above your eyebrow.

Diagram showing the correct fitting for bike helmet

It’s Time to Replace the Bike Helmet When . . .

 • You’ve crashed in the helmet.
 • Your child — or you (no judgments!) — has outgrown the helmet.
 • The helmet has dropped onto a hard surface, like concrete.

Can Hoverboards Get Wet? https://swagtron.com/faq/hoverboards/can-hoverboards-get-wet/ Fri, 18 Jan 2019 18:45:37 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?post_type=bwl_kb&p=283787 Read More]]> Close-up of a hoverboard being ridden in the rain (not recommended)
Hoverboards can take you a lot of places. Riders enjoy a lot of different styles and all sorts of features, bells, and whistles. Some of them, like the T6 Outlaw, can even handle a variety of terrains — from gravelly pavement to tall grass.

The one place your self-balancing board can’t go, is into the water. That doesn’t mean you have to run and hide inside at the first sign of drizzle or wrap your board in plastic like your Great-Aunt Carol’s couch. It does mean that you should avoid riding through puddles, don’t try to go riding in the rain, and don’t ramp it into your buddy’s pool . . . no matter how much the boys dare you to try.

Hover Board Electronics Don’t Like Water

Hoverboards are meant to be ridden. They aren’t made out of papier-mâché and they aren’t gremlins. Your self-balancing board isn’t going to melt or turn into a red-eyed monster and attack you if you leave it out in the rain. At least, we know ours won’t.

Gremlins aside, hover boards currently run on electricity and electric components still don’t like water. The motherboard and lithium-ion batteries that power your board are not designed to handle water. Which means if you drench your board, it will likely just stop working.

Many boards have some degree of water resistance (noted by the hoverboard’s IP rating) and can handle a light drizzle. Some can even survive being driven over a few small puddles — though we still recommend avoiding them. The risk is in exposing the electronics and the battery to water. However, even water-resistant boards aren’t designed to be submerged in water of any depth. Electric components and water just don’t mix and if your battery and/or motherboard suffer water damage, your board is in serious trouble.

Self-Balancing Boards + Wet Surfaces = A Dangerous Combination

Obviously, submerging your hover board is an absolute no-go, but what about riding through puddles to kick up a sick splash or hydroplaning across a wet parking lot? The answer is still a negative, Ghostrider.

Even all-terrain hoverboards with 10-inch tires designed for unpaved surfaces, like our Swagboard T6 Outlaw, are not recommended for use on wet surfaces. In addition to the risk of exposing the board’s inner workings to water, you can lose stability and traction on wet surfaces — and you’ll probably end up with both a ruined board and a wet backside. It’s not worth the risk.

My Hover Board Got Wet, Now What?

Accidents happen. Freak rainstorms pop up. Puddles appear out of nowhere. People don’t read instructions or FAQs on their new self-balancing board until it’s too late and they’ve already tried to ride it through their little brother’s kiddie pool (seriously, don’t do that).

Is all hope lost? Maybe not.

It depends on how wet your board got, how dirty the water was, and whether your board has any water resistance. Unfortunately, the steps for dealing with a wet hoverboard are not like those for dealing with a wet phone. You can’t fix the hoverboard by tossing it into a huge tub of rice and waiting for everything to dry out.

If your hoverboard gets wet:

 • First things first: Turn. It. Off. Immediately.
 • Contact the manufacturer. Also immediately.

Depending on how much water got into your hoverboard, it may still work after completely drying. However, if it doesn’t, it’s because, as we said before, hoverboard electronics don’t much like water.

You know what else doesn’t like water?

Most Manufacturer’s Warranties Don’t Like Water Either

Most electronics enjoy some form of limited warranty — from televisions and PC monitors, to smartphones and tablets. But even the most generous warranty from a manufacturer will have a clause against water damage.

Make sure you understand your product’s warranty (preferably before you purchase) and check to see if there is an extended warranty available. Extended warranties can come in many forms. They can either extend the time period of the warranty. Or they can extend the actual coverage to include scenarios not covered under the limited manufacturer’s warranty. This extension might include accidental damage, water damage — or both!

If your board still isn’t working, you’ll need to contact a certified repair professional who can assess the damage. You can contact the manufacturer of your hoverboard to see if they have authorized repair centers in your area. Repairing a water-damaged hoverboard will certainly require a few new parts, but it’s possible an authorized repair agent will have a better chance — not to mention better training and better tools — to get your hoverboard back up and running again.

The Bottom Line: Keep Your Hoverboard Dry

Amphibious hoverboards are likely to be developed before floating boards that we saw in Back 2 the Future Part II. Boards that can handle deep puddles or even take you through shallow water may well be on the horizon. But they’re not here just yet.

For the time being, the best way to keep your self-balancing board functional is to keep the board on dry land. Dry days and dry surfaces are best for getting the most out of your hoverboard.

How to Stop on a Hoverboard https://swagtron.com/faq/hoverboards/how-to-stop-on-a-hoverboard/ Wed, 16 Jan 2019 23:03:17 +0000 https://swagtron.com/?post_type=bwl_kb&p=283436 Read More]]> Close-up of kid stepping back off a hoverboard
Hey! Want to star in a viral YouTube video compilation of hoverboard fails? No?

Then read on! Because we have some tips on how NOT to faceplant while riding your self-balancing board, as well as how to stop and dismount without ending up spread-eagled on the pavement.

Become a Master of the Hover Board Basics

Yeah, we know there are a lot of sick tricks out there for your Swagboard. You’ll get to those in due time. Before you can get acrobatic with your board, you must be able to mount, dismount, balance, turn and stop. It’s not as easy as it looks, at first. Most people fall their first time. So be prepared to laugh at yourself a little. Learning to ride your new hoverboard takes time and practice, but in the end, you’ll persevere.

In the very beginning, you’ll want to start by using your board’s training mode which will limit your speed, so you can get a feel for your board before you go all out. This will stop you from accidentally taking off at full speed before you mastered slowing down and coming to a stop.

How to stop on a hoverboard

Mounting Your Board for the First Time

This isn’t Hogwarts (unfortunately) so it will take a little more effort than putting out your hand and saying “UP” to mount your hoverboard. There’s a knack to it and just about everyone falls at least once, so don’t feel bad when that happens. Here are some dos and don’ts for your first time:

 • Wear the recommended protective gear. You’re not super-powered. You are susceptible to bruises. That means: ATSM-approved helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads and a tailbone protector.
 • Start out in an open area, free from obstacles.
 • Make sure your board is powered on before you step on. You’ll fall off right away without the powered gyroscopes inside. (Some of our hoverboards even have auto-balance at startup, which helps keep the board upright while powered up.)
 • Place your dominant foot on the board first, then your second foot and stand straight up.
 • Don’t stand with your knees bent. And don’t bend over. Your board will take you in whichever direction your body is aiming so this is the part where you want to avoid leaning.
 • Don’t be ashamed to ask your friends to lend a hand. Trust us, no one wants a busted or brusied tailbone.
 • Find a comfortable, wide stance where you feel balanced — about shoulder-width apart.
 • Don’t tense up. Relax and focus on standing normally.
 • Lean forward, slowly, to start moving.
 • Don’t lean at the waist, most of the movement should be in your ankles.
 • Remember this is a sensitive machine. Small moves will take you a long way.

How to Steer Your Self-Balancing Board

Turning on a hover board is a lot like everything else. It’s all in the balance and pressure you apply by shifting your weight. Push your right foot forward to turn right and your left foot forward to turn left. Don’t bend at the waist, most of your movement should be in your ankles.

Much like moving backwards and forwards, learning to turn starts with small moves. As your skills progress, you’ll be ready to make sharper turns. This is accomplished by pushing the toes of one foot down while simultaneously pressing down with the heel of your other foot. If you hold that position, with enough practice, this is the basic technique you’ll use for one of the first tricks many people learn: spinning in a circle.

How to Stop on Your Hoverboard

Again, it’s all about tilt and balance. The self-balancing board will follow your lean. Lean back slowly to bring yourself back to an upright position. If you lean back too far, you’ll start to move in reverse or fall, so be careful. As your tilt decreases, so will your speed. As you slow to a stop, you can step off the back of your board.

How to Dismount from Your Hoverboard

We cannot stress this enough: Step. Backward. To. Dismount. Your. Board.

Of the All-Time Biggest Mistakes rookie riders make with their hoverboards, stepping forward to dismount is high on the list. And it’s an easy mistake to make. You’re starting to lose your balance and you instinctively want to make sure you don’t faceplant, so you step forward to “catch” yourself.

But stepping forward to dismount is how you end up with a #hoverboardfails attached to your name. When you’re ready to dismount, step backward with your dominant foot and don’t tense your muscles.

Practice, Practice, Practice . . . Then Learn Tricks

Once you’ve mastered these basics, you’ll be ready to start learning how to do tricks on your swag. We’ve put together a showcase of a few basic tricks here. These range in difficulty from beginner, to intermediate, to expert.
